GMI Cloud Announces 1GW Sovereign AI Infrastructure in Japan Accelerated By NVIDIA Vera Rubin NVL72™
GMI Cloud briefs the media on $12BN, 1GW Kagoshima AI Factory buildout at GTC 2026
March 18, 2026

Today, GMI Cloud is proud to announce the launch of an AI Factory for large-scale physical AI purposes in Kagoshima, Japan, representing one of the largest sovereign AI infrastructure commitments in Asia.

This $12 billion project establishes GMI Cloud as the leading partner for nations seeking to build independent, sustainable AI Factories. The development in which GMI's AI factory is intended to be located is initiated by Kai Shin Digital Infrastructure, a joint venture structured by CDIB Capital and Shinetsu Science Industry, in close collaboration with the Kagoshima Prefectural Government and Satsumasendai City. Reinforced by strong public-private partnership support, the development will start in late 2026 and can ramp up to 1 gigawatt of power capability.
Japan’s Economic Impact and the Future of Manufacturing

The Kagoshima AI Factory is positioned as a foundational investment in Japan’s economic future, establishing one of Asia’s largest sovereign AI initiatives. Securing high-performance AI compute is considered a fundamental pillar of national security and economic competitiveness. This project will secure Japan's economic destiny, attract world-class talent, and create a hub of innovation by providing necessary sovereign infrastructure.
Crucially, this AI Factory is purpose-built to supercharge Japan’s world-leading industries, particularly robotics and automotive manufacturing. The facility will facilitate new frontiers in Physical AI — intelligence that powers systems in the physical world. This will drive the manufacturing industry by supporting possibilities like:
AI that controls precision robots on a factory floor.
AI that powers fleets of autonomous cars.
Industrial automation, intelligent manufacturing, and autonomous systems.
This infusion of intelligence is designed to help Japan maintain its industrial leadership and manufacturing excellence.
Investing in Japan’s AI-Driven Future

The global shift towards sovereign AI is driven by a consensus that AI computing power is a fundamental pillar of national security and economic competitiveness in the foreseeable future. Governments are moving decisively to mitigate the strategic risks of depending on foreign-controlled platforms in addition to data jurisdiction conflicts and supply chain vulnerabilities. GMI Cloud's expertise and proven experience in architecting, deploying, and scaling sovereign facilities positions the company as the partner of choice for countries seeking technological independence.
By localizing high-performance compute resources, we are ensuring that Japanese enterprises, researchers, and government entities can develop AI models that are secure, compliant with local regulations, and optimized for the unique needs of the region.
Bringing the NVIDIA Vera Rubin NVL72 Online
While the Kagoshima buildout provides the scale, our partnership with NVIDIA provides the performance. GMI Cloud is thrilled to announce that we will be among the first to bring the NVIDIA Vera Rubin platform online.
As the successor to the NVIDIA Blackwell platform, Vera Rubin represents the pinnacle of AI hardware. By integrating these systems into our global network of datacenters, we are providing our customers with:
Unprecedented Training Speeds: Powering the next generation of trillion-parameter LLMs.
Energy Efficiency: Maximizing performance-per-watt to meet our sustainability goals.
Sovereign Excellence: Ensuring that the world’s most powerful chips are available within secure, localized environments.
Why Sovereign AI Matters

The concept of "Sovereign AI" is simple: nations and organizations must have the ability to produce AI using their own infrastructure, data, and workforce. Our Kagoshima project is a physical manifestation of this ideal.
By combining the massive 1GW scale of our Japanese initiative with the sophisticated power of the NVIDIA Vera Rubin platform, GMI Cloud is eliminating the "compute gap." We are giving innovators the tools they need to build the future without relying on distant, centralized cloud providers.
Looking Ahead
The buildout in Kagoshima is just the beginning of GMI Cloud’s global sovereign AI initiative. As we bring these AI factories online, GMI Cloud will continue to expand for the countries and regions who request our expertise, ensuring that high-performance AI compute is a global utility: accessible, sustainable, and sovereign.
We invite you to join us on this journey as we redefine what is possible in the age of AI.
